# Product transformation with AI: *the Thoughtful Robots way*#
More possibilities mean more choices about where and how AI becomes part of the product. The starting question is a simple one: where does AI actually belong?
## Our Understanding#
AI gives product teams **new ways of solving existing customer problems and potentially entirely new things their products can do.** But having more possibilities also means having more choices about where and how AI should become part of the product.
For us, that makes the starting question for product transformation a simple one: **where does AI actually belong in the product?**
The answer comes down to whether AI can make the product meaningfully more useful for the people using it. That means understanding the customer problem, the value AI could create, and whether the experience makes sense for the business and can realistically be built and operated.
## Finding Where AI Belongs#
We start by understanding what customers are trying to achieve and where AI could meaningfully improve that experience.
Imagine a product where customers need to work through large amounts of information to make a decision. AI could help them **find the right information, summarise what matters, compare options, recommend a next step, or take an action on their behalf.** Each represents a different role AI could play in the product.
We evaluate these opportunities across **customer value, business impact, technical feasibility, trust and organisational readiness** to understand the role each could play in the product.
## Turning Opportunities into Product Direction#
**In the example above, these opportunities don't necessarily exist in isolation.** Finding information can support comparison, comparison can inform recommendations, and recommendations may eventually lead to taking action. They may also rely on the same knowledge, context, permissions and trust.
Understanding these relationships helps us see how individual opportunities can come together into a **coherent direction for the product** — what should lead, what should support it, and what should come later.
## From Direction to Delivery#
Turning a product direction into something real does not mean building everything at once. We start with the **smallest useful experience that can test the most important assumptions** behind the direction. In the example above, that might mean starting with an intelligent search experience before moving towards comparison, recommendations or taking action.
From there, we build on what works — improving the experience, strengthening reliability and evaluation, and adding the capabilities needed to move towards MVP and production. Each stage gives us more confidence about what should come next.
## Our Goal#
For us, product transformation is successful when AI moves from being a possibility to becoming a **useful and trusted part of the product experience**.
The goal is not to add more AI, but to build the right capabilities in the right places — grounded in customer value, shaped by what we learn, and strong enough to become part of the product customers rely on.

How an organisation understands its workflows, identifies and prioritises AI opportunities, assesses readiness, and decides what to build, buy, wait on, or stop.
